At this time
requested information on the
availability of the following equipment stating that he
was researching the use of this equipment as follows:
Photo electric eyes used commercially for burgler
alarm systems.
stated that they (PIRA) desired to
convoys.
elaborated that their (PIRA) existing method
of triggering
these mines is by use of a trip wire which
is. ineffective in that on.several occasions, the target
b6
vehicle would pass the mine prior to it being detonated.
b7c
stated that the British convoys normally travel at
b7D
high rates of speed for just this purpose.1
He stated that
he and others (not identified) are attempting to utilize
the electric eyes to trigger the mine after the mine is
armed by remote control.
stated that in this manner,
the instant the target vehicle
"breaks the beam"the mine
will detonate.
This will enable the PlRA to target a selected
vehicle in the convoy, preferably a troop carrier.
Covert closed Circuit Television (ccrv) cameras
and monitors.
stated that the purpose in attempting
b6
to obtain this equipment is to determine the feasibility
b7c
of covertly instaliing the camera for surveillance purposes
b7D
and to also entrap British soldiers.
stated that British
patrols routinely search abandoned farm houses and barns
to search for hiaden arms/explosives caches.
The CCTV will
enable the PIRA to determine if the British soldiers are
in the target building and thereafter detonate a remote
controlled explosive device. Both
expressed
the ytmost concern over injuring or killing civilian personnel.
stated that the use of the Ccgv wiil prevent the injury
to civilians who have in the past, inadvertently, triaqered
explosive devices targeted against British patrols.
stated that by utilizing the covert ccrv and the remote
controlled detonation of explosives, the accidental detonation
preventing the killing of givilian individuals.
also discussed the various means
b6
that the CcTv picture could be transmitted to a receiver.
b7c
This discussion included the use of radio frequency transmission
b7D
and the use of fiber optic systems wire. The fiber optic
systems wire was ruled out in view of the obvious disadvantage
of being able to trace the wire from the. camera to a receiver.
The radio frequency trapsmission method was determined (by
at any number of receiver in various locations.
