IRA Arrests
Broke Ring,
Official Says
. By LEE COppOLA
The arrest of two IRA activists
while trying to enter the United
States last month led to the break-
dowmofasophisticatedinternation
al pipeline designed to sneak Irish
aliens into the country to raise
funds for the Irish Republican
Army,the Buffalo director of the
U.S.Immigration Service said
. today.
The ring, responsible for smug-
thizers across the border in the past
.eight month's, included two key
operatives in the Buffaio area,
Benedict J. Ferro said..
"We bave exposed the apparatus
andtheindividuals andit won't
easily be put back together," Mr.
Ferro said.
.The pipeline,he added,inchuded
stops in Toronto and Montreal,
/ where the IRA sympathizers were
given phony identification to be
used in trying to enter the United
States at one of the four bridges on
the Niagara Frontier.
Mr.Ferro declined to name the
two Buffalo area participants in the
ring, but said the men were respon-
sible for transporting the iRA'
sympathizers once they had'entered
the country.
("They either drove them to New
York City or to the Buffalo air
·port," Mr. Ferro said, adding the
Buffalo connections presumably
housed'the sympathizers at their
homes overnight on occasion until
their scheduled flights. :
Immigration agents first got
wind of the ring nearly a year ago
when an illegal alien from Ireland
was arrested in New York City and
tried to swallow a piece of paper.
