O'MURCHU IS NOT with the Provisional IRA,Ithe
oue doing the fighting in Northern Ireland. His is theOf.
fiial IRA,a socialist political organization.
He is here, he said, to lecture.on “Culture and Revo
lution in Ireland,Irish Nationalism and International So-
cialism,and Alienation and Socialism
I asked him about the big Israeli shipbuilding con-
tract just awarded to the Harland and Woiff Shipyard in
Belfast. Is this a blow to.efforts of theIRA to weaken the
economy in theNorth?
He said the“workers"have no objection to the con-
tract.Neither has his organization.
Somebody must have. The day the contract was an-
nounced, the office building at Harland and Wolff was
bombed.
"WHAT ABOUT the Provos," I asked? "You know:
The ones with the guns."
“The Provisional IRA, becausc of its activities, has
-land," he said.-'They have no program to offer the peo..
ple, and we have."
He went on like.that awhile.as,I watched the cat
crceping up on his. dinner. Whenever it got too close,
O'Mlurchu would chase.it with.a-swipe of his grcasy
hand.To distract it,he tossed a chicken bone on the
kitchen floor, but the cat ignored the bone and continued.
stalking.
I thought of what happens when a Provisional IRA
man comes to town.
He stays with some businessman in Drexel Hill and
has a car at his disposal. He goes to places like the Irish
Center on Emlen st.and tells a goodly crowd about the
"bloody atrocities of the bleeping British Army." Then,
after a rousing chorus of “The Mien Behind the Wire,”he
walks out, with enough money to buy a couple of auto-
matic weapons.
"" WHEN O'MURCHU FINISHED 'telling me about the
struggle of the workers against imperialism,Helena
Sheehan let me out onto rain-sivept Hamilton st.
olle of the world's soggiest countries),"' I said.
:1."Oh, no” she said. “The rain in Ireland is much
'more clean and gentle.
