Mr. LAsTER stated that these arrests and seizures were
the result of a joint FBI-U.S. Customs Service investigation;
begun in l980, into the arms procurement activities of the
Irish Republican Army in the United States.
Violation of the federal firearms statutes (Title 26,
U.S. Code, Sections 5845 and 5861 (d) ) which deal with the
registration of and the payment of taxes on firearms carries
a penalty of a $l0,0oo fine or lo..years' imprisonment, or both.
Those individuals.arrested will be afforded an arraign-
ment before a U.S. Magistrate in Brooklyn, New York today at
2:30PM.
