crime. We have not profited or sought to profit from the poverty
of others, nor have we hated or sought to foster hate against any
race, colour or creed. We have not killed or sought
to kill,
stifled or sought to stifle the spirt soul or dignity of humanity.
If in todays society such principles constitute a crime then todays
society is itself criminal, and the special F.B.I. agents who
hover over Irish communities like birds of prey, seeking their
victims, are criminal and the instruments of the criminal, imper-
ialist poiicies of Ronald Reagan and Murderer Thatcher--the real
criminais and terrorists of this worild. It is my privilege to
stand with those in all lands who will not be criminalized.
Finally. if the future of America depended on Prosecutor
Kirby, with his iil concealed anti-ixish and pro-British attitude
and with the government thugs who desecrated my home then the
future woula be bleak indeed.
However, the future lies not with
them but with the genius of our defense counsel, Frank Durkan, Bill
Mogulescu, Michael Kennedy, Eleanore Kennedy, Michael Dowd, Larry
Vogelman, Barry Scheck, David Lewis and with all the briiliant
students from the Benjamin Cardoza Law School, who assisted in our
defense.
The future lies too with a faixminded judge, and an
impaxtial jury, composed of all the ethnic people of this nation
Black, Hispanic, Italian, Irish. 1
I have no idea as to their religion
or political affiliations but I salute all of them now, for 'the
Arrayed against us was all the apparatus of a pro-British govern-
ment administration in Washington D.C., pius the hidden influence
of British intelligence and the specture of the viliianious woman
Prime Minister Thatcher.
There in that court with us stood our brilliant defense
team, the solidaxity of our people who filled the courtroom day in
and day out for eight long weeks.
The ghost of Bobby Sands whose
name was mentioned so many times, came back to haunt his murderer
Thatcher.
Then despite some futile attempts by Kirby and his
superiors to prevent her appearance, Bernadette Devlin McAliskey.
Militant Irish activist appeared as a character witness for two of
the defendants.
It is my privilage 'to have known her as friend and comrade
for thirteen years but I was never more proud of her than I was
when she waiked to the witness stand and described the abominable
conditions in British occupied Ireiand, the murder of thirteen
civilian demonstrators in Dexry on Bloody Sunday, the murder of
